QuestionI am searching for information on plants that would be suitable for an indoor pool/gym environment, where chlorine will be present. I am doing a plant project, for my floristry course.I noticed you had replied here to someone else back in 2004!, about a similar subject for a science project. I want to demonstrate knowledge of a suitable container display, with plants that will tolerate this atmosphere/micro climate, but think I have chosen a difficult task!! It needs to be for a client whom has requested a suitable planted container - in a different micro climate, and I thought this was different!!. I'm having problems getting information, and finding plants that would be happy in this environment?. I thought a tropical range of plants - something that would like humidity would be fine?! - now I'm learning that it will be a very toxic atmosphere. HELP please if you can. My project needs to be in and completed by 28th Feb!!
Thank you very much.
AnswerHi Hannah,
It took me a while to find this information and I got some professional help. A book by David Hamilton, "Commercial Indoor Plants," lists the plants below as suitable for use in areas where high chlorine levels are in the air. I do not know this from personal experience, but I consider the source to be reliable. Also, these plants should never be watered with pool water, only tap water.
Dracaena warneckei
Sansevieria
Aspidistra - Cast iron plant
Bromeliads
Beaucarnea - Ponytail palm
Agave
Yucca
Leea coccinea
Ficus elastica 'Decora' - Rubber plant
Clivia
