top heavy dieffenbachia

Question
I have a large dieffenbachia that has gotten very top heavy. I would like to cut it off and try to reroot it. The top is very pretty. The stem is about 3inches in diameter. Is this possible? Thanks for an answer. Judy Mohler

Answer
Hi Judy,

Not only is pruning your Dieffenbachia possible, it is a necessity!

Dieffenbachias naturally become very top heavy as they grow taller. Eventually they start to fall over unless they are supported by a nearby wall or with sturdy stakes. Neither are very attractive solutions.

The solution is to prune the stem by cutting it through with sharp pruners or scissors (the angle of the cut does not matter). New growth will emerge from the cut stem at a point just below where you make the pruning cut. So cut pretty low so that it doesn't become top heavy again in a few months.

Take the pruned off top portion and cut its lower stem so there is about 6-8 inches of bare stem below the lowest leaves. Dig a small hole in the soil of the existing pot and insert the top cutting into the hole. Tamp the soil down tight around it.

Continue to provide good light and proper watering and eventually you will have two healthy stems filling the pot. Of course, with continued success those stems will eventually become tall and top heavy and will need to be pruned again, but you will know what to do next time.

I have written an article on Dieffenbachia care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected].
