QuestionI have a umbrella tree and the leaves seem to fall off when the plant is touched or even moved . I do let the plant dry out between watering, and when I do water it I just add water to the top of the pot and I do it twice. it seems to me that it gets bright indirect light. I also use a stones and put water in it so I increase the humidity, and I only put enough water in the pan to get the stones wet. the plant ever sits in water. with all this the leaves seem to keep falling off I am confused
can you help me Please
thank you for your time

AnswerHi Wade,
There are many things that could cause this problem. The most likely cause is you could be underwatering the plant. You should never allow the soil to dry out completely.
As a general rule, you should allow only about the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry between watering, then water until a small amount of water drains out of the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Watering the plant until water drains out of the bottom is important. It not only makes sure that all of the soil is watered thoroughly and evenly but it also flushes out excess salts. Fertilizer and chemically treated tap water (Especially water treated with water softeners) leave salt residue in the soil. If not flushed out, excess salt will build up in the soil and make it difficult for plants to absorb water.
Check to make sure there are no cold drafts on the plant, such as from around a window or a frequently opened door.
Also check the plant carefully for any sign of insects or mites. Insects, especially spider mites, could cause the plant to drop a large number of leaves before their presence is noticed.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks
Tracy
