QuestionWE HAVE A RUBBER TREE PLANT THAT IS OVER 10 YRS OLD.IT IS ROOT BOUND IN A 17INCH POT AND IT IS RUNNING OVER.THERE ARE AT LEAST 10 DIFFERENT SHOOTS RUNNING OFF OF THE MAIN ROOT.IT IS ON THE SHOWROOM FLOOR OF OUR DEALERSHIP AND GET PLENTY OF LIGHT AND AIRFLOW.I DON'T WANT TO KILL IT BY PRUNING IT AT THE WRONG TIME OR WRONG WAY AND I WOULD LIKE TO SPLIT THE PLANTS UP IN TO OTHER POTS.YOUR ADVISE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.
AnswerHi Pam,
I need either a good photo of your Rubber Tree or a better description. You seem to be concerned about the roots, but don't mention anything about the rest of the plant. If the plant is healthy then there is no reason to be concerned about root exposure.
Stem pruning an be done at any time of the year, but I am not sure just what it is that needs to be pruned.
Dividing the plant is not a good idea. It will be very traumatic to the plant, especially if you are inexperienced in doing this kind of surgery.
