QuestionI have an indoor plant that I purchsed, a Yucca,it has been trimmed to look like a Palm. I normally have it in an outdoor sun room, but with winter approaching I brought it in the house. The leaves have been getting black spots and new growth begins to wilt and dry up within days. I have noticed webs on the plant, which I thought was a spider web. I have been clipping off the wilted leaves and leaves with black spots, but it is going down hill fast. Its a beautiful plant and I dont want to loose it,can you help with treatment.
AnswerHi Christy,
If the new growth is discolored or damaged, then there is a serious root problem. Most likely it is because it is no longer getting adequate light and it uses far less water than before. I am guessing that you have not altered your watering routine since you moved it inside. Or perhaps you repotted it and that is causing the roots to rot.
Yuccas should be in small pots with porous soil and must be located in front of a sunny window that is uncovered throughout the day. The soil should dry about a quarter of the way down into the soil before it is watered thoroughly. If your tap water is hard, use filtered or distilled instead.
Yuccas do not attract spider mites, so I don't think the webs that you are seeing are a problem.
I have written an article on Yucca care that I will email for free to anyone who sends a request to me at my address below.
