QuestionHi Will, I have a crown of thorns plant and I would like to take some cuttings. How do I properly cut it? In particular, where do I have to cut it? Where the branche begins or where the leafes start?
Thank you very much!
Claudia
AnswerHello Claudia,
Switzerland, wow!
Your Crown of Thorns Euphorbia milii) can be pruned at any point on any one of the stems. New growth will emerge from the cut stem just below where you make the pruning cut. So the key determinant in selecting a place to cut is deciding where you would like new growth to emerge.
However, as far propagating the cuttings, tip cuttings that are less than 6 inches in length are best for rooting. Let the cuttings heal in the open air for about 24 hours before inserting them about an inch deep into a small pot with a porous potting mix. Keep the potting mix just slightly damp and provide lots of warmth and sun for best results.
I have written an article on plant propagation that I will email for free to anyone who sends a request to me at my address below.
