Mold spores and Mushrooms

Question
Will,

I've been reading your responses to questions and must compliment you on the quality of most of your answers.

I have a question though, about one of your recent answers to "Farah" regarding her Dracaena Marginata. Farah mentions mold growing on the surface of the soil. Your response to her concern about mold states: "In addition, the soil that you used apparently was contaminated with mold spores that produced the mushrooms, which are actually harmless to the plant." (Farah never made mention of mushrooms in her question.)

Here lies the source of my confusion. Although both mold and mushrooms are fungi, I thought they were sufficiently dissimilar that they could not reproduce with each other.

Thanks for the clarification,
Jake

Answer
Hi Jake,

Thank you for the compliment and thank you for pointing out my error in carelessly using the word 'mushroom' rather than 'mold' in my reply to Farah. I try hard to be accurate, but when answering lots of questions each day I do occasionally make errors. Hopefully, they are not errors of substance.

Regards,
Will Creed
