QuestionHello Will,
My three moth orchids bought within 2 years all have developed at least one leaf that is split down the middle "seam". This usually happens 3-12 months after I get the plant. Except for the leaf split the plants seem healthy. They are in an east window in the same pots they came in and get watered just when the moss is almost dry but not totally. Is this a serious problem and how can I stop the leaves from splitting? Sometimes the leaf wilts, turns yellow and falls off after a few months after splitting but not always.
Thanks for helping, Caera
AnswerHi Caera,
Leaf splitting is a genetic weakness that some Phalaenopsis hybrids have. Hybrids are manipulated genetically to obtain specific flower qualities. However, other characteristics often get short changed in the process. So there is nothing you an do except continue to provide the care you have been providing. When leaves start to discolor, just cut them off. The flowers should not be affected.
