QuestionI have had my corn plant for about 18 months. It was doing wonderful until I repotted it. It was still in the little plastic container that it came in, and I had it sitting inside a nicer pot. So finally a couple months ago I repotted into the nicer pot. It is in the same place and I have kept the same watering schedule but all the leaves have turned brown and died. Is there any way to save it or is it too late?
AnswerMisty,
From your description I am bettig that the nicer pot has no drain hole aor drain tray under it and your corn plant is accumulating more water in the bottom of that pot every time you water. So it is drowning at the bottom and the roots are rotting. You have to move it to a pot that has a drain hole and the new pot should have a diameter no more than 2 inches larger than the original pot that you bought it in. Too large a pot will not let it dry out enough between waterings. A half hour after watering it you should empty the drain tray so it is not sitting in excess water. That will cause root rot. It has to dry out well between waterings. Do not water if the soil is still moist.
For future refeerence you should only repot any house plants between April 1st and July 30th. That is when the days are getting longer and the roots and plant are growing. After that the days are getting shorter and the plant goes into a semi-dormancy so the roots do not grow into the new soil till spring and you are risking root rot.
Move it to a pot with good drainage and follow my instructions on watering and it will improve. Good luck.
