QuestionI had a beautiful 12ft umbrella tree, i moved home 2 years ago and put it in the only available spot i thought was the best; since that time the leaves have constantly dropped and i have had to cut back the 5 stems, it is now very sad looking, i did repot it in the early summer and fed it with miracle grow, to no avail, i really don't want it to die completely, so please help
AnswerHi Jane,
In general, plants do not like to be relocated. More specifically, they don't respond well to a change in light intensity. You didn't mention the light it received before or now, but the symptoms certainly suggest that inadequate light is now the problem. Sometimes the 'only available' spot just does not provide enough light. Scheffleras need to be in front of and very close to a window that is uncovered throughout the day. Sometimes they can be acclimated to somewhat lower light, but that is a long process.
Repotting and fertilizer almost never fix any plant problems, contrary to popular wisdom. Indeed, both should be reserved only for healthy plants that are growing vigorously. It is possible that both the repotting and fertilizer have aggravated the problem, but more light is still the only solution. Depending on how serious is its decline, it may be too late. If you cannot provide adequate light, you will not be able to save your plant.
