QuestionI purchased a canela plant about 2 months ago and it seemed to be doing well. Now it is dropping leaves quite a bit. Many of the leaves are turning brown and then they fall off. I believe I'm watering the plant enough. I did notice some small worms in the soil but based on others questions the worms should not be an issue.
AnswerHi Joe,
The botanical name for your Canela is Cinnamomum kotoense. It can survive in low to medium light, but only if the soil is allowed to get very dry between waterings. In bright light it will do much better and will use more water. You didn't mention the light that yours receives, but I will say that this is a very difficult plant unless it is in a sunny location close to a window.
You also didn't mention how you water your Canela and improper watering can easily lead to the symptoms you described.
Both inadequate light and improper light often take a month or more before the symptoms start to show up, so it my not be anything recent that is causing the problem.
Many folks repot their new plants and that can lead to all kinds of problems. Again, I don't know if you repotted, but if you did, give me the specifics.
I agree, that any soil critters are not likely to be related to the the leaf loss.
I can give you a better analysis if you can provide me with more information than just the symptoms. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Joe - This plant is often sold as a low light plant in order to increase sales. Although it is possible to grow it in reduced light, it is very difficult. Thanks for the top rating and nomination!
