QuestionI bought a lovely little ficus in a hanging basket about a week ago. two or three days ago I woke up to find almost the entire plant dry and crunchy as could be. there are a few small stalks here and there that still appear to have healthy leaves but the rest is just a mess. the soil is still fairly moist to the touch, even just half an inch or so deep. it's hanging directly in front of a window with the blinds down, recieving direct filtered light for most of the day. i cut back a lot of the extremely dead-looking stuff but since almost all of it is dry i don't know what to do. can i save this plant?
AnswerJamie,
Open the blinds. this plant loves the sun and needs bright sun, If the soil is wet or mushy to the touch you have watered it too much. If it has no drainage hole in the bottom of the pot and you cannot pour excess water out of the bottom of the pot it is drowning in too much water. It has to only be watered when it is dry and the plant feels lighht weight and after you water it any excess water needs to bee poured out into a bucket. Then it does not get watered again until it is very dry and light weight in about a week, not before. Too much water kills more plants than too little water. You can buy an inexpensive water meter in many garden centers that will allow you to check all your plants before you watr them and make sure the are getting close to the dry range before you ater them. Good luck.
