QuestionI抳e had the massangeana for 4 years by a window with sufficient sunlight. Recently some of its leaves turned brown. I gave it medicine and left it outside on a Jersey's summer night and it completely went limb. Its beautiful leaves have wilted. What can I do to revive it? I do not want to say goodbye?
AnswerGeni,
A mass cane does not like any direct sun, if it was getting sun that may be what caused the brown leaves. Another cause of brown leaves is overwatering which also sounds like it contributed to your problems. The plant must be in a pot with a drainage hole and a drain try and you should always empty the drain tray an hour after watering the plant so it is not sitting in a tray full of water which will rot the roots. It is not a swamp plant. You said you gave it medicine but did not say what that was. It may have also damaged the plant. I suggest that you clip the damaged part off even if it is down to within 4 inches of the soil. Then keep the plant very dry. If the roots are still healthy they willl send out new shoots and you can regrow the plant. If you want to know immediately if it is savable you can carefully unpot the roots and inspect them. If they are all black and mushy the plant is probably not savable. If they look wiry and white or brown and heealthy there is a good chance that they will send out new shoots and regrow the top.
If the plant is not savable I suggest you purchase another and be very careful not to overwater and keep it out of the direct sun. Good luck.
