amerus

Question

Answer
Gary,

I believe that you are talking about an Amaryllis. No you should not cut back the leaves. You should cut back the flower stalk to the base. Set the plant outside in a location where it will get at least 6 hours of sun a day. Also fertilize it heavily for the summer to feed the bulbs so it will produce more blooms in it's next bloom cycle. Continue feeding it until the leaves begin to die back on their own. At that time clip the leaves down to 2 inches above the top of the bulb. Then let the plant dry out and place the pot and all in a dark location or in a brown paper bag. After 180 days check it weekly for signs of new growth. Whe you see growth put it back in the sun and begin fertilizing again and you should get nice large blooms. Good luck.
