Question
I bought a box of "ammo-carb" at the pet store instead of only activated carbon for  a layer in my terrarium.  (The ammo part absorbs ammonia.)  I am worried I need to take the terrarium apart and remove this product.  My question is will this product remove nitrogen components away from the plantsor will it serve as a "nitrogen bank"???

Answer
Susan,

It is possible that it will bind up the nitrogen although I am not familiar with the product so I cannot be positive. Activated charcoal would be a much better choice. If you just built the terrarium I would make the switch. If it is already settled in and roots established I would not. The absorbing ammonia part will only work for a limited tiem so chances are if your plants are healthy it absorbing some of the fertilizer for a couple of months at most will not hurt. If the plants start deteriorating I would tear it apart and change it immediately. Otherwise just keep adding fertilizer at 1/4 strength each time you water for a few months. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
