bonsai lighting

Question
QUESTION: i put my bonsai uner a 75 watt light bulb {regular} bout 2ft away, can it talke that kinda of light or does it need regular sunlight?

ANSWER: Tonalyn,

Incandescent light bulbs do not have the full spectrum of sun that your plant needs. Flourescent bulbs do and you can now get flourescent bulbs that screw into a lamp like regular incandescent light bulbs. Get one that says it is a daylight bulb and equal to a 75 watt bulb. It will not be as hot as an incandescent light bulb so you can have it closer to your plant and it needs to be no more than 6-10 inches from your bonsai. What kind of  plant is your bonsai? Let me know and I can give you more care instructions. Good luck.

Answer
Tonyalyn,

I think you mean a juniper. I like those too and I have a couple. Of course I have a lot of bonsai trees, both indoor and outdoors. I have been a member of our local bonsai club for about 20 years and I was club president for over 10 year. I would encourage you to join a bonsai club in your area. That is the easiest way to learn a lot about bonsai in very short order. You always have someone to ask a lot of questions and they always have a lot of neat trees to inspire you.  Most clubs also have auctions at their club picnics in the summers where you can get new plants for bonsai cheap!! I can help you find a club near you if you tell me what bigger town you are in or near.

Your new juniper is actually an outdoor plant and needs to be kept outdoors year around. Just because Walmart had it inside does not mean it stays inside. It likes full sun outdoors. If you have a deck with a table that would be a perfect location for it during the summer. in the winter it can be set on the ground up against your house and buried under the snow. Or you are best off talking with other bonsai  folks in a club in your area and see what they do with their outdoor trees during the winter. If you keep an outdoor tree indoors it does not get enough sun, humidity and wind and it generally dies an early death. If you do keep it under light it needs at least 14 hours of light a day and it is best to use a timer to turn the light on and off. Good luck.
