QuestionI have a peace lilly (Spathiphyllum) that seems to have a fungus of some sort. Every time it produces new leaves, the leaves turn black %26 shrivel. I've re-potted the plant with fresh potting soil, and I don't water the dirt directly, I water from the tray under the pot. The older leaves seem to be healthy. I don't see any bugs of any kind. What causes these black leaves? What can I do to get rid of it?
Thanks!
Susan
AnswerSusan,
Black margins and tips on foliage plants usually suggests the the plants are suffering from soluable salt build up in the soil. Peace lilies are especially sensitive with the leaves turning totally black quickly. This happens because when watering is done one does not allow for proper leaching of the soil each time and as a result salts build up, burn roots and this translates to brown margins. Watering from the bottom encourages this. It is suggested that each time you water put on enough water so water comes out the holes in the bottom of the pot. This results in leaching. Then you empty the drain tray. Never let any plant sit in a drain tray full of water. That is like leaving it sit in a swamp. I might suggest that you take the pot to the bath tub and run lots of clear water through it to first flush the soil. Wait until the top inch or so is dry and then water. I might also suggest you not use any fertilizer right now as that can contribute to salt build up. Hopefully with good leaching the new leaves coming out will not be affected as much if at all. Good luck.
