QuestionWe have a potted banana tree that we brought in last fall, (actually the baby of the original plant that died after bananas were produced), it was beautiful at the time, about 7ft. tall, it continued producing leaves as normal until about 6 weeks ago, when all leaves just bent down and we had to remove. It now appears to have a new sprout but has not grown. I was wondering if we now cut it off if it might spike growth.
Any suggestions?
AnswerJan,
I am not clear on what you are saying. No, I would not cut this new shoot off, it is probably not growing because it is not getting enough light or it is getting too much water. It needs to dry out between waterings, it cannot be constantly wet. I suspect that being too wet was why the large one died. That is what caused the collapse. This new shoot needs full sun to grow. As soon as your area has night time lows above 50 degrees you should get it outside in a shady area and slowly move it out into more sun each day. This is to keep it from being sunburned. When you move it outdoors you need to start fertilizing it every 2 weeks with Miracle grow. Next fall when you move it back in make sure you only water it when it is very dry. Good luck.
