Majesty Palm Growth

Question
Hey! I have a majesty palm that I keep indoors that is approximately 4'5" high. About a year after I purchased it I repotted it into a larger pot as it seemed really crammed in its original container. Whenever a frond is unhealthy and brown I prune it but I prune it all the way off to where you can't tell it was there. Could this be why the remaining palm fronds lean and aren't as high or could it be because its it a larger pot and the roots aren't as compact or what? I would really like for it to grow upward and straight as I see in the store where they are over 6 and 7 feet tall!

Answer
Natalia,

Majesty palms are very touchy plants. They need high humidity and they like moist soil but they do not like to be sitting in trays full of water or their roots may rot, especially if they are in too large a pot. You must empty the drain tray an hour after you water it each week. If the roots are rotting that is why the palm is leaning and aren't growing taller like you would like them. You need to unpot it and check it for root rot. If you find black slimy roots cut them out back to healthy wiry looking roots then put the plant in a smaller pot that just  holds the  root ball. Then empty the drain tray after you water it every time and when the top 2 inches of soil feels dry it is time to water it again and empty the drain tray.

It would be helpful to put a humidity tray under the drain tray. That would be a larger tray under the draintray that you can fill with water that will evaporate around the palm and keep the air more humid. The palm will not be able to absorb the water because the empty drain tray will be between the pot and the humidity tray. Also make sure the palm is getting bright light but no sun. Bright light will help the plant grow taller. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
