Questionhow do you take a long corn stalk with very few leaves and replant it , i cant seem to get the stalks which come from the bigger wood looking stalk to get to that point with the green stalk. I replaced the pot today, the plant was not root bound, but was loosing leaves, I thought it needed a bigger pot, now I have extra room, and would like some new shorter plants around ground level, please tell me how. thank you, it is my favorite plant.
AnswerScott,
You want to know how to take cuttings from your draceana and get them to root. The best way is for the healthy plant to get large and you to air layer a piece off. Air layering instructions are at the following website: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/ornamentals/airlayer/airlayer.html
However your plant is not healthy because it is loosing leaves. It is probably loosing leaves because you are keeping it too wet. It needs to totally dry out between waterings. In fact it needs to be dry for 3 days before you water it. It cannot sit in wet soil constantly. I bet you fould it did not have a lot of roots when you repotted it. That is because when it is too wet the roots rot off. By moving it to an even larger pot it will have an even harder time drying out between waterings. You should have moved it to a smaller pot instead of a larger one and move it to a brighter location. Also make sure you are not watering it with water that has flouride or chlorine in it. Corn plants hate those chemicals and it causes leaves to get brown spots and die. To save your plant move it to a smaller pot and water it less then it will have a better chance of surviving. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
