Question
Sunflowers
I just went to Target and I saw this $1 pot (2 inches wide 1 1/2 inches tall) that came with a soil pellet and sunflower seeds. I just had to buy it. I got home and made the soil and put the seeds in it. About 3 days later the sunflower stalks were already 2 1/2 inches tall! I was just thinking "What will I do when they get to be 4 inches?" and thought I should ask you. I wanted to know what size pot I should buy, and if you recommend any type of soil I can get from somewhere like Home Depot......
P.S I'm not putting them all in the same pot...And if you can give me a little info like are sunflowers hard to take care of,are they easy to take care of etc. etc. etc....
Thank you so much,
Giana
AnswerGiana,
You will need to move them each to a 4 inch clay pot to a saucer under it. They need to be in the sunniest south facing window you have. You need to be very carefull not to keep them too wet. Empty the drain tray after you water them and do not water again until the soil is nearly totally dry. The soil can be any regular potting soil, I usually buy the cheapest, then buy an extra bag of perlite (the little white pellets) and mix 2 parts potting soil and 1 part perlite. The perlite give it better drainage and texture to keep your plants healthier. As soon as the temperatures are above 5o degrees at night where you live you should plant your sunflowers outside in the ground if possible. Good luck.
