Houseplant
I received a plant as a gift, but have no idea what it is or how to properly care for it. It has long, needle shaped leaves and a reddish-pink protrusion in the middle. It it NOT a flower, rather a stalk of similar leaves. I am unsure whether to categorize it as a fern or perhaps a bush.

Your plant is a Guzmania Bromeliad, a very beautiful and exotic plant that is very easy to care for. It is neither a fern or a bush, it is full size and blooming now.
