Question
Corn Plant
I purchased a corn plan (a Dracaena fragrans massangeana i believe) a little less than a week ago. In the store it looked green, bright and healthy. However, now I think it may be dying.
Its leaves are browning and drooping, some of them even have very brown, dry edges. The browning is in the form of spots that get more prevalent closer to the stem and some of the browning leaves are curling under. This is happening to the leaves throughout the plant, not just the ones on the bottom.
I did not re-pot the plant when I brought it home so its still in the container i bought it in, the soil was very dry and I know you should wait until the soil is dry before watering a corn plant. Therefore I did water it when i brought it home.
Do I remove all the browning leaves? I have provided pictures of the plant. Any help you can provide to save my plant would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!
AnswerHollie,
I suspect that you are watering you dracaena with water that has chlorine and flouride in it. That causes the blistery looking spots that turn brown. All dracaenas hate chlorine and flouride.
You need to start watering with distilled water or allow your water to sit for 72 hours so the chlorine and flouride will dissipate into the air before you use it and not harm the plant. The store may have also been watering with chlorine and flouride before you got the plant and you just didn't see the very first signs of damage. Now they are obvious. Since you have had it less than a week and it looks that bad I would call and see if it is possible to return it. The damage had to start before you purchased the plant for it to look that bad at this point. If you watered it when you 1st brought it home you should have only watered it one more time today. You should not be watering it more than once a week. It does not dry out more than that. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
