QuestionHi my name it thelma, I have a lucky bamboo plant that is not so lucky lately. I have had the plant for about two years now. my neighbor was moving and gave it to me so I don't know how old it is. It was doing well for a while but I now noticed that the leves are turning yellow and all of the roots are orange. I think the plant is dying. I thought the roots were choking because they art all webbed around the rocks at the bottom of it's original vase so I took it out of that vase and put it into a bigger vase. what can I do to save this plant and are the totally orange roots a sign that the plant is dying? Please help me make my bamboo lucky again. thank you, Thelma
AnswerThelma,
Orange roots on lucky bamboo are not a problem. Actually healthy, established lucky bamboo roots are orange or rust colored. New ones are white or cream colored. There is only a problem if the roots are black. Black roots are dead and decaying and should be removed.
Yellow leaves are a problem. They can indicate the plant has gotten cold. Under 65 degrees is cold to lucky bamboo. Or that you have watered it with cold water. Or that you are not changing the water often enough and/or using "city" water on it with flouride and chlorine. Lucky bamboo hates flouried and chlorine. As long as the stalk has not turned yellow the plant can recuperated and become healthy again.
