QuestionHi Darlene,
A friend of mine gave me two cane cuttings from her corn plant (after reading through a few of your answers, I'm pretty sure this is a horrible time to propagate any plant).
I have the cuttings in a medium sized pot about 10", I have city water but I let the water sit out for about 24 hours before watering. The cuttings are sitting in a south facing window and I've been watering the canes about once a week. One cane cutting is starting to develop a little black on the top (not sure if it's because it's dried out?) I've had the cuttings for about 3-4 weeks now. I would like to know what I should to do for the cuttings to succeed? Any advice will help! thank you!!
AnswerChristine,
Quite the opposite, the black sounds like there could be some root rot from too much water. Dig down with a fork or your fingers and carefully loosen the soil and remove the stalk. It won't have a lot of roots yet. You are checking to see if there is any black mushy spots in the roots or on the stalk below the soil level. If you find soft black mushy spots you will need to cut them away and then repot the cutting. After that water it minimally. Keep the soil just slightly moist. Makes sure it drys out nearly totally before you water again and never leave water sitting in the drain tray. Make sure it is sitting in a very bright lodation. That will will help it root faster. Good luck.
