QuestionI have enjoyed my corn plant for almost 20 years. When I brought it in for winter this year, IT BLOOMED! Have you ever heard of that? It has very fragrant flowers. Will it produce seeds? Leaves are a little yellow with browning on edges. I need to prune it, it's getting a little leggy and weak from it's height. Any comments or answers would be greatly appreciated.
AnswerKelly,
Yes, I have heard of them blooming and they do have very strongly scented flowers especially at night. They will not produce seed unless you live in the tropical rain forest they are native to where the tiny flies are that will pollinate them at night are. The yellow leaves with browning on edges indicate it is either getting too much light or too much water. It needs to get very dry between watering and it should not have sun shining on it but it should be in a bright location.
You can prune it any time and it will not hurt it but if you want to root the parts that you prune off you need to wait until spring (after March 15th at the earliest) when the days are longer and your cuttings will be most likely to root.
They only bloom when they are approximately 15 years old or older and rootbound. If you keep it in a the same pot it is likely that it will bloom again. If you repot it into a larger pot it probably will not for several years. They are really happier being rootbound. If you have more questions write again. Good luck.
