QuestionHello,
Background:
In spring of 2009 I received a bouquet of "Black beauty" roses. They looked okay when they dried and I took my time throwing them out. When I did take them out oof the vase one stem had sprouted roots and i managed to have have it survive and grow in a pot. I used manure and peat mixed with soil.
Since then it's produced two tiny roses. (The orignals were quite small too.)
My question is - does this plant need a dormancy period? If so, how long, when and how cold should I let it become? I live in Winnipeg, Canada so our winter temperatures are often too cold for many strains.
AnswerHeidi,
I did some research and my information says Black Beauty Roses are Hybrid Tea Roses that come from New Zealand. They do need a dormant period of about 3 months. New Zealand has areas where the temperatures get down to freezing. If you can keep it between 0 & 5 degrees celsius that should be fine. However, I am a houseplant expert. Allexperts.com has a rose expert and her name is Lynnette Payne. She lives in Canada like you. I suggest that you also consult her. Good luck.
