QuestionDarlene,
I have mold in the soil of several of my houseplants, so I know I am doing something wrong. What can be the cause...overwatering? and how can I get rid of the mold without completely removing all the soil?
AnswerDiane,
You may be overwatering or you may just have potting soil with too much vegetative stuff in it and the mold is helping digest (turn it into soil) that. However I know, it is disgusting and I have had the problem myself. The fix is easy, spray the surface with Lysol type spray. It will kill the mold and not hurt the plant. You can do it repeatedly until it stops remolding. Simple fix. Do remember too though that this is winter and your plants are not using as much water. Cut back on the amount and the frequency. If they are not dry don't water. Do not leave water in the drain tray, it promotes root rot. Empty the drain trays an hour after watering your plants. Good luck.
