QuestionIs Dieffenbachia hybrid houseplant poisionous to children and kids??
AnswerDear Noelle,
The effect of the sap of the dieffenbachia on the mouth and throat is very unpleasant hence its common name of Dumb Cane. When taking cuttings of the plant when there is likely to be sap on your hands you should make sure you wash your hands afterwards so you don't transer the sap to your mouth.
I am not sure if the sap is actually deadly but if I had inquisitive childen and pets at home I would not have this plant growing in my house just to be on the safe side. As my daughter is adult and in any case never had a predilection to taste any of my plants I have several different types of dieffenbachia as I love the variegation on their leaves.
But my advice to you is better to be safe than sorry.
