plants for hot tub

Question
hello.  i have a hot tub outside my house in the back, facing north.  i just had a gazebo built around it. Presently it is screened in, but in the winter we will install glass actually a glass substitute.   I would like to know what kind of plants would do well in this environment in the winter.  i live in long island, ny.  many thanks..........rhea

Answer
Hello Rhea,
The gazebo will need to be kept warm if you want to keep plants there in the winter time. If the temperature can be kept at or above around 65 degrees then low light, high humidity plants will do well in there.
A few years ago a friend of mine built a large, heated greenhouse to make it into a garden conservatory and installed a hot tub in it.
A couple of plants that have done especially well for my friend in that kind of environment are Prayer Plants and Calatheas. Calatheas come in many different vivid colors, shapes and sizes. The most common type of Prayer Plants are green but there are a few colorful varieties of Prayer Plants too, such as red Prayer Plants and variegated Prayer Plants.
Some other types of plants that would do well are Philodendrons, Pothos, Syngonium and Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema). If you decide to keep any kind of Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema) out there make sure the temperature stays at or above 65 degrees because Chinese Evergreens are sensitive to cool temperatures.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
          Thanks
