QuestionHello: I just bought an orchid and was told by the shop keeper to #1: keep away
from direct sunlight and #2: put one ice cube on top of the moss once a week.
She put moss on top of the pot. Is this correct? Is one ice cube enough water?
Also, my second question: If I have extra cola lying around, would it help any of
my house plants by pouring it on top?
AnswerDear Garry,
If you read my profile you will see it says that I don't know much about orchids however, having said that I am growing a couple myself so I can experience the highs and lows!
It is correct that the orchid should not be in direct sunlight but it should have plenty of light, at least 10 hours a day.During the summer months it will enjoy being outside during warm days.
You should feed during the sjummer months and repot after a few years as they appreciate being pot bound.
As regards watering I would NEVER put an ice cube on any of my plants. Freezing cold water can cause shock to a plant and in any case orchids like tepid, soft water i.e. bottled water if your tap supply is hard.
As I never buy cola I never have any to spare and have no idea if it will help or hinder house plants. Since I wouldn't drink it myself it would not occur to me to give it to my plants! But maybe you have been told it is good for plants? I think I read somewhere on this website of someone who gave their plants cola or was it champagne?!! I don't remember. Sorry I can't help you on that front.
As regards putting moss on top of the pot maybe she did that to make it look attractive or to keep it cool and help drainage. As I said I am a beginner myself and still learning about these plants and I believe there is a lot to learn! Why don't you go back to the store and ask the assistant.
A favour - if you are going to rate my reply please do not give me a bad rating for knowledge as really I shouldn't be answering this question but I didn't want to let you down!! Thank you and good luck!
