QuestionFive years ago someone gave me a Jade indoor plant that is in a 6 inch plastic pot. It has grown great since then but a branch has been pressing down on the top edge and cracked it, so I may need to repot it. I'd get a larger pot but since it has done well in a plastic one, should I get another one or is a clay pot that much better? Thanks
AnswerDear Lee,
When the time comes to first re-pot my plants I always choose a clay pot. There are several reasons for this - firstly I think clay looks much more attractive than plastic, secondly there is less chance of the plant becoming waterlogged as clay is porous, thirdly clay is heavier than plastic so more suitable as the plant grows larger and finally, salts which could damage the plants are drained away from the compost.
Of course with a plastic pot if you drop it or it is knocked over it is less likely to break, the plant will need less watering, the pots are easy to keep clean and no crocking is required.
It really is a matter of personal choice. Whichever you choose I am sure your jade plant will continue to flourish as you obviously have the knack of growing plants.
