Question
My tree
I was given a small tree house plant and want to know what it is. The trunk is straight and about a foot tall. The leaves look like grass, and are long and curl at the ends. I have to keep it up on something that allows some room for the leaves because they are now about 3 feet long. It looks like this tiny little trunk with a huge head of green long hair. It is a beautiful little tree and I would like to get more. I've attached an image, do you have an idea of what it could be?
AnswerGood morning Loren,
Isn't that just a great little plant - well not so little really!
Your plant is known as a Pony Tail plant [Beaucarnea recurvata]. These plants are not that well known in Europe although funnily enough I saw a similar one in a garden centre recently [I am in southern Spain] but are very popular in the States.
They can grow very tall indeed if given the right conditions - they like a warm dry atmosphere so are ideally placed in a centrally heated room. They enjoy being in a brightly lit situation and will appreciate some sun.
As the the swollen trunk base stores water you must be careful not to overwater - you can safely leave the plant until the compost is dry before watering again. Misting is not necessary.
I am sure your plant is going to give you years of pleasure.
