QuestionI received a money tree a few years ago and the
tree is growing pretty good although all the ends
of the leaves have brown tips ,its height has
doubled to two foot in 1 year , my question is
my tree came in a tall and narrow vase with only
stones as its soil ,there is no sand or anything
but stones, and i keep the vase full of water at
all times ,is this the correct way this plant should
be potted,i see other ones and there in a sand
base with no water, should I switch how mine is
potted at this point !,mine is just medium and
small stone and water ,thats it , but it seems to
be growing ! thanks david
AnswerDavid,
I have never seen a money tree in just water. I would not leave it that way. I would plant it in a mix of 2 parts sand, 1 part gravel and 1 part potting soil. For the gravel you can use the stones it is in now. Put it in a pot that has a diameter as wide as the root s are deep right now. In other words if it is 6 inches from the base of the tree to the bottom of the vase put it in a 6 inch pot. Make sure the pot has a drainag hole and a drain tray under it.
After repotting it water it thoroughly making sure all the soil in the pot is moist and some water goes in the drain tray under the pot. Three hours later empty any excess water out of the drain tray so it is not sitting constantly in water that might cause the roots to rost.
Insert a bamboo shish kabob skewer into the soil all the way to the bottomm of the pot and cut it off just above the top of the soil. About 5 days after you watered the plant pull the skewer out and see if it is dry or moist. It it is dry down to the bottom 2-3 inches it is time to water the plant. If it is still moist higher than 3 inches wait 2 days and check again. Do not water until the plant is nearly dry. That will guarantee you are not overwatering.
If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
