Clivia, soil insects

Question
I have a young Clivia.  When watered today, we saw many tiny white insects.  They are very thin and no larger than 1/8 inch.  Also noticed a bit of white crusty stuff on top of soil.  Can you tell me what this is and how to treat.  Tks.

Answer
Cob,

Without having a picture of the insects or seing them it is impossible for me to identify them.

I can tell you to remove the white crusty stuf on top of the soil and put it in a ziplock bag then put it in the trash so it is removed from your property. Then water the plant with 2 parts of 70% isopropyl alcohol mixed with 1 part water. This should kill the insects on contact. You will need to water it again with the same mix in about 5-7 days to kill any additional insects that hatch out of eggs buried in the soil.  Treat it every 5-7 days until you see no more signs of insects.  Good luck.
