QuestionMy coworkers and I were all 3 given Persian Violets as a gift. Mine is great! There's not so good, one worse than the other...there is no doubt it is due to overwatering and that the one is in process of root rot. The stems are turning brown and dying. What can we do to save it? Maybe repot it? or is it too late? We have moved them to a 'safe place' where no one else can water them & the one continues to do better, tho still wilted and sad.
AnswerHello Kim,
Maybe you can save the overwatered plants - have you checked the roots?
If they are all rotted - ie are brown and soft - then, sorry, there is no hope.
However if only part of the root ball has rotted then you should leave it out of the pot to dry for a few days and cut off rotted roots with a sharp knife when it is dry. If, during this period, the leaves and flowers wilt then spray them to keep them cool and hydrated.
When repotting use either a new pot or make sure the old one is washed thoroughly, fill up the gaps with fresh potting compost and keep the plant in a reasonably well lit situation but not in direct sunlight. When you see new growth then you can start watering again but with great care!
General instructions for your plant, deadhead as the flowers die and it should remain in flower until the Autumn. Generally speaking after flowering the plant is discarded but if I had one I would keep it for as long as the foliage looked OK.
Hope your friends manage to save their plants and that yours continues to grow and flower well.
