QuestionI received a Northfolk Pine Tree as a gift. I have watered it weekly and repotted it, because the bottom branches had been dying out. That hasn't helped either. It continues to grow but the bottom branches are still drying out. I have it placed at a window so it get light and the afternoon sun. What can I do?
Thanks for your input.
AnswerHello Carolyn,
I don't have any personal experience of growing a Norfolk pine or indeed any type of pine. However, for what it is worth here are some suggestions. Firstly it probably wasn't necessary to repot the plant unless you investigated and saw that it was pot bound.
Secondly it may need more watering than just once a week - give it a good soaking in a bucket of tepid water until the air bubbles stop rising to the surface, remove, drain and replace on tray or saucer. Try misting all the branches regularly. Although these pines can grow well in shade or sun I would remove yours from direct sun. If the bottom branches are very dry and unsightly then cut them off as there is no point in keeping them and making the plant look ugly.
The plant should be fed fortnightly and potted on every alternative Spring.
I do hope you manage to save your gift. Good Luck.
