QuestionHello. One of my co-workers overwatered her Gold Dust Dracaena and was throwing it out. I took some cuttings from it before it went out, and I would like to know what to do. Because of the woody stems, does it root better in water or soil? I would like to root, and share some of the cuttings with her.
AnswerHello Tasha,
If you have the plant crown you can plant this directly into potting soil but if you took cane cuttings then you can grow a plant from each cutting which should be between 2" and 3" in length bearing at least one node. The cuttings can be placed horizontally or planted upright in seed and cutting compost. If planted upright please make sure you plant the end which was the lower part of the stem into the soil.
Cover the pot and cuttings with a poly bag to ensure maximum humidity thereby aiding root growth. Place in a light position out of direct sun. When, and not before!, there is new growth, that is the time to pot on into a slightly larger pot, water carefully, place back in the position where it was originally for a week or two to let it settle, after which they can be moved to their permanent growing position.
Let's hope you manage to grow several new plants which you can share with your friend. Good Luck
Diana
