What is this?

Question

New plant
I bought a beautiful flowering plant today that came with no name or care instructions, I couldn't resist it.  Can you tell me what it is?

Answer
Dear Tamra,

I am amazed that the person/shop who sold you this plant did not tell you its name and advise you on how to look after it.  When I had a florist/plant shop I always made sure that each plant had a care label on it and also gave verbal instructions to my customers. I should go back to the shop and ask them for the name of the plant! If they don't have it then where did they purchase it - the grower must know.

Having said that my first reaction when I saw the leaves and flowers was that it is a Dipladenia but when I saw the thick stems and roots I began to wonder.  It certainly looks like a dipladenia but I have only seen bushy plants and those which climb up trellises and have quite slender stems.

If it is a type of dipladenia then it needs warmth, not less than 55F in winter and should be in a brightly lit situation but not in direct sunlight.  It should be watered regularly, misted frequently especially when in bud or flower.  Don't forget to feed it whilst it is flowering but not in the resting season.

I should love to hear more about how this plant is growing and if you are successful in finding out exactly what it is. See if you can find out the botanical name as well as its common name.  Good luck!

Diana

P.S.  Dear Tamra,

Finally I have found out what your plant is!  It is a desert rose [adenium obesum].  It likes full sun which encourages it to flower, needs regular watering and good drainage.  Feed once a week.  I have never actually seen one in the flesh, so to speak, but have asked my local garden centre if they can obtain one for me as I would love to try my hand at growing it.  How is yours coming along?

Diana
