old aloe plant

Question
I live in NC and received an aloe plant from my granddaddy today that he brought back from Florida in the 80's.  It is in a pot that is about 6in.  There are some green parts left, but a lot of light brown parts, also.  I have absolutely no experience with aloe plants.  I read in an earlier post to mix 50/50 with sand and potting soil.  Do you have any other helpful information.  It means a lot to me to be able to help this plant survive.  Thank you!

Answer
Christie,

Treat it like a cactus. Indoors give it lots of sun. Mine sits in the corner of an enclosed sun porch where there are windows facing both south and west and it is very happy. I do not put it outdoors in summer because it is happy where it is and it will sunburn easily. If you want to put it outdoors in summer make sure it does not get midday sun or it will sunburn. Morning & evening sun are fine.

You can carefully remove the dried out light brown parts. Be careful not to over water this plant, let it dry out totally between waterings.  Do not move it to a bigger pot at this time. There are many varieties of aloe, if you email me a picture I may be able to help you identify it or at least give you a bit better advice on caring for it. You can send them through this site or you can send it to [email protected]

Good luck with your granddaddy's aloe.

Darlene
