QuestionI have 2 amaryllis bulbs that are starting to grow again, after wintering in the basement. Both are not going to put out a blossom. How do I treat them this summer, so that they will bloom again next Spring? I usually set them out in their pots, during the good weather, and feed them bone meal periodically during the summer. Then put them in the basement to let the leaves die down.
AnswerIrene,
You need to feed them more than just bone meal. Amaryllis are heavy feeders and the bulbs need to grow larger at this point in order to bloom next year. They need to go out in a full sun location and they need to be fed weekly with Miracle Grow for blooming plants or Miracle Grow for roses following the instructions on the Miracle Grow as to the amounts. Then put them in the basement in the fall to die back as you have in the past. It is the heavy feeding all summer that will help the bulbs grow so they will bloom again in the spring. Good luck.
