Question
the fungus
I bought a yucca plant from ikea last weekend and make the mistake of already watering it. I looked at it today to find what looks like a fungus growing out of the soil. Please let me know what this fungus is if you can identify it. Also I wasn't sure if the plant is going to be okay or if I should return it.
Thanks!
AnswerStephanie,
It appears to be some type of toadstools growing in very acidic heavy soil. Yuccas should be planted in a sandy soil that is kept on the dry side, much like a cactus. They should be kept in the sunniest location possible in your home. I would either return the plant if it was very expensive and I was very upset or if I felt it was reasonable and it is a beautiful plant and it is worth saving then I would go to Lowes or Home Depot and get a bag of play sand.
Then I would remove the top layer of soil that has the mushrooms or toad stools and put a layer of sand over the top. Then I would take a gardening shovel and work it straight down into the soil making slots and widen the slots letting sand go down into the soil at several points aroud the pot without disturbing the roots anymore than you have to. After that watch the plant carefully. If you see any more signs of toad stools you can spray the surface of the soil with Lysol Spray and it will kill the spores that grow them. It may take several applicatios to get rid of them completely.
When you water the plant be very careful not to overwater it and do not water it until it has been very dry for at least 4-5 days. As I said this plant should be treated like a cactus and get lots of sun and minimal water. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
