Should I repot my dracaena lisa?

Question
I bought a new dracaena lisa today and don't know if I should repot it.  It is in a
3 gallon container and is about 6 feet tall.  If I do repot it, can you give me some
tips?  Thanks.

Answer
Angela,

No, I would not repot it unless I thought it had really bad soil for some reason. If the soil is dark with lots of perlite (little white pellets that look like styrofoam) and it crumbles in your fingers well it is fine. Just set that in a basket or ceramic container with a drain tray under the plant. Set the plant in a bright location where your hand will make a good shadow.

Be careful not to overwater the plant. If you have to water it with city water that has chlorine and flouride in it allow the water to sit in an open bucket for 24 hours before you use it so the chlorine and flouride will dissipate into the air. All dracaenas hate both chlorine and flouride. They also cannot stand to be overwatered or to sit in a drain tray full of water so an hour after you water you need to empty that drain tray. So make sure you basket is large enough that you can get a turkey baster down in there to empty the excess water out of the drain tray into a bucket so the plant is not sitting in a lot of water that will rot the roots. Allow the plant to dry out for several days so the pot feels lighter weight when tilted to one side before you water it again. Good luck.
