worms in the dirt of my Cat Palms

Question
I have three small Cat Palms. I bought them in the spring of 08, all summer they were outside. In the fall i moved them indoors, now I am in a house that is somewhat dry, I have a humidifier on the plants, keep them moist, but they leaves are turning brown and I can't seem to get rid of the the centipede like worms, except for when I water too much they'll die.  What are they and how can I get rid of them and keep my plants alive?

Answer
Cindy,

You are overwater and keeping them too wet so the roots are rotting which is causing the brown leaves and the rotting roots are attracting the centipede like worms. They are actually the larval stage of fungus gnats. Let the plants dry out more and water them with water mixed with rubbing alcohol 50/50. The alcohol will kill the larval worms in the soil. If you keep the plants barely moist they will be much healthier. Good luck.
