Olive Trees

Question
Good Day,

I was recently at a nursery in the UK and noticed olive trees (olea europea) for sale.  I would like to know if they would be a good balcony plant in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Our temps very from -2C (28 F) in Jan to 22C (73F) in Jul.  My balcony faces WN and I do have a fair amount of sun in the afternoon.  However, I am not sure if that would be enough for this plant.  Furthermore, can you provide any guidelines as to how I should prepare the plant for winter or summer? (Only if the plant is suitable for my conditions.)

Regards,

Arthur

Answer
Arthur,

I have a bonsai olive tree here in northern Indiana and it is very happy outdoors in the summer in as much sun as possible. But, unfortunately it is a nearly tropical tree, from the shores of the Mediterranean, so it must be taken indoors when the temperatures drop below 10C at night in the fall. I keep mine under flourescent lights in my basement all winter and it is perfectly happy.

If you can provide a sunny place indoors for the winter or under lights for the winter you can grow the plant. If love the sun. It does not need frequent repotting, it tends to like being tight in the pot. It likes a sandy type light soil and to be kept on the dry side. Do not let the it sit with water in the drain tray. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
