air plant

Question
QUESTION: Hi, i have a question about a blooming air plant. Right now it is in its blooming stage, but i dont no exaclty how to water it. Different websites tell me different things so right now i am confused. I know that i'm not supposed to submerge the whole plant including the bloom in water but can i submerged the bottom half of the plant in water overnight while the bloom is on top of water? Also how long do i leave it in water for? Can you please give me detailed information on how to water my plant? Thanks

ANSWER: Danny,

In nature these plants would get watered by the rain. You did not say if the plant is mounted on a board or in a pot or a shell or what? The best way to water it is to put water in a spray bottle and set the plant in the kitchen or bath sink and mist it twic a day. Growing in the bath as long as it gets bright light but no direct sun would be great. They love high humidity and there is higher humidity in the bath than in any other room due to showers, baths and water eevaporating from the coommode.

Leaving it in standing water all night will cause it to begin to rot and cause the flower to quickly die. Misting it in the morning and evening is your best bet. Also it likes a temperature drop of about 10 degrees at night if that is possible. If you have questions about the specific conditions in your home feel free to write again. Good luck.

QUESTION: It is actually in a shell, and i can take it out and let it dry and put it back into the shell. So basically i cannot soak it in water even though the bloom is above water? not even for like 15 minutes or so? Thanks agian

Answer
Danny,

Actually I had  a friend that brought me one from Florida and gave it to me as a gift. It was in a shell and I just dipped it in water for a few minutes twice a day and mine died. Hers are still alive after 3 years and I asked her what she does. She says she sprays them whenever she thinks about it 2-3 times a day and that's it. Good luck.
