question on house plants

Question
I have geraniums that are indoor and I have a problem with a white colored moss or bacteria that covers the ground of the plant.  The plant seems to be doing well, what causes the bacteria or moss and how do I get rid of it other than scrapping it off

Answer
Frank,

It is mold. It is from the soil or fertilizer that you are using or could even just be from some mold spores in the air and your soil was a warm moist environment that they grew on. Allow the soil to dry out well between waterings and that will interupt the cycle of thee molds growth. You can also spray the surface of the soil with Lysol spray and that will kill the fungus spores that grow the mold. After that allow the plant to dry out before you water it again and the mold should not come back. Geraniums do not like to be kept to wet anyway. Also keep them in the sun.  Mold will not grow as well in sun as it will in lower light locations. Good luck.
