Good Evening,
I was given an indoor house plant today and I have a concern. First I do not know what kind of house plant that it is. It has Medium sized green leaves with a shinny top and bottom layer. The leaves on this plant are also spaced out about 1 inch apart. It has a think stem Kinda like the bamboo plant I have. No other stems grow off of another stem. The leaves that grow on this plant grow like this: One on each side of the stem and then 1 inch to the next set of leaves. This plant was in my husbands office building and he brought it home. My concern is that have 2 cats and we want to make sure that if one of the cats chew on this plant will it be harmful to them? I would like to thank you in advance for your time!

I beleive that it is a variety of a zamia or a cardboard palm. Yes, it is poisonous to cats so you will need to keep it up out of their reach or in a roomm they are not allowed in. It needs to dry out well between waterings so the soil is very dry before you water it again. It appears to have had leaf shine spray applied to the leaves to make them so shiny. That clogs the leaf pores. Do not use it again and the plant will be healthier. It will be happiest in a bright location but no direct sun. Good luck.
