QuestionI have an aloe plant and it is so heavy that the bottom is falling out ! How deep should i bury it into the dirt so as the plant will get some water, and should i trim some of, if it is so heavy!
AnswerJennifer,
I am not sure what you mean by it is so heavy that the bottom is falling out? The bottom is falling out of what? The pot? This is not a good time of year to be repotting any houseplant. If you must repot it because the pot is broken move it to a pot that is exactly the same size as the one it is in now. Make sure the new pot has a drain hole and a drain tray underneath it. Do not bury the aloe any deeper than it is now or you will smother the roots. Loosen some of the soil around the roots and replace it with fresh potting soil that is half potting soil and half perlite. The perlite will lighten up the soil and allow the roots of the aloe to breath better.
As far as trimming, you should not trim it. You can remove some of the lower leaves if you would like. Discard them. They will not grow a new plant. If the plant does not have a lot of roots you will need to keep it very dry for the next month. Do not give it more than a 1/2 cup of water a week for the next 2 months and keep it in the sunniest location possible. That will give it an opportunity to grow healthy new roots. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
