problem ficus

Question
I received a rather large (10-12') ficus house plant for
Mother's Day 1 1/2 years ago, it was so beautiful when we
brought it home.  In dropped about half the leaves in first
couple of months, nursery took it back for a couple of
months.  I brought it home again and it dropped leaves
again.  This summer I put it outside and it seemed to do
better, however since bringing it back indoors some of
leaves are turning brown (not dropping as many) and I
recently noticed a few spots of mold on the top of the
soil.  I have been fertilizing it and thought we were doing
better, but plant is looking very frail.  I love this
plants and would appreciate any and all advice.  Thanks.

Answer
Amy,

Give it less water. If it is growing mold on top of the soil you are keeping it too wet. It is not a swamp plant and it does not like to be constantly wet. It needs to be alternately wet then dry fopr a few days.

Also move it to a location where it will get more sun. It did better outside because it got more light. It needs as much sun as possible while it is indoors. Move it to in front of a south or west facing window with the drapes or blinds open from dawn to dusk so it gets as much sun as possible. These 2 steps will bring it back to the beautiful vibrant plant you love. If you have more questions feel free to write again. Good luck.
